Continuing fall in unemployment “excellent” news

15 May, 2013 1 Comment

Unemployment in Cambridge continues to fall and the news has been welcomed as “excellent” by MP Julian Huppert.

In April, 1,514 people were claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance, down by 86 on the previous month and 201 lower than in April 2012.

“More and more people are finding jobs and that is excellent news,” said Julian. “This is very encouraging and proves that our economy is heading in the right direction.

“We are seeing month on month decreases in unemployment which is good news for the families behind these statistics, good news for the businesses which are creating these jobs and good news for our city as a whole.

“We have been fortunate in Cambridge to ride out the worst of this economic downturn but that has been little comfort for those people who have struggled to find work. I hope that more and more will find the job market easier and we will continue to see more jobs becoming available.

“Cambridge is a great city in which to do business. I hope more businesses will choose to make the city their home and our existing companies will continue to do well creating further opportunities.”

    “Unemployment continues to fall”

I trust your statement that unemployment is based on not including all the redundancies in the retail sector when companies in Cambridge go bust or have to downsize due to lack of sales? There are so many empty retail spaces, Cambridge looks like a ghost town.

I presume you have also chosen not to include to all the redundancies in the public sector as a result of budgets being slashed?

Or those on forced labour jobs to get £30 a week?

or those who have had their benefits stopped?

I appreciate that all these groups allow figures to be massaged somewhat, so I would like to clarify the situation.

Unemployment is NOT falling in Cambridge, it is rising – just like it is everywhere else in Britain- as a direct result of Government policy.

    Thank you for your time.
