Government blocks Cambridge Energy Bill

April 21, 2007 8:01 PM

The Government has again blocked moves to allow Cambridge to set high energy efficiency standards in new developments.

The Government's whips yesterday officially objected to the Local Planning Authorities (Energy and Energy Efficiency) Bill , sponsored by local MP David Howarth. The Cambridge Bill was inspired by the experience of Cambridge City Council who have had the energy efficiency requirements in the Local Plan watered down by Government inspectors.

David commented:

"This is a concerted effort by the Government to stand in the way of Cambridge's environmental standards. First, Government inspectors watered down what the City Council can demand of developers in the Local Plan. Now twice the Government has blocked legislation which would free Cambridge, and other councils, to set the higher standards in energy efficiency and renewable energy that people in this city want.

David talks to City housing boss about energy efficiency improvements in Cambridge homes

"The City Council is setting high standards in terms of energy efficiency in its own housing but we need to be able to demand equally high standards from private developers. Developers should not be allowed to get away with buildings that are environmentally unsustainable."
