MP 'converted' to feed-in tariffs

David Howarth, Lib Dem Energy Spokesperson, has called for the UK to adopt Germany style feed-in tariffs to encourage the development of renewable energy.

Speaking to the UK Energy Research Centre last night, Mr Howarth called on the Government to set a guaranteed price for renewable energy to encourage renewable energy in the UK.

Mr Howarth commented:

"The UK has the potential to produce more electricity from renewable sources like wind and waves than the country consumers but we are falling behind other, less resource-rich countries, in renewable energy generation.

" Our Renewable Obligations Certificates have yet to lead to substantial increases in renewable energy capacity with only 60MW of wind capacity being installed since the system was introduced. In contrast Germany has seen over 5000 MW installed in just 2 years of the feed-in tariff.

"After looking at detailed research into feed-in tariffs and our own ROCs, I have been converted to the idea that we need a feed-in tariff system in the UK. Careful economic research based on evidence should be at the centre of our policy-making.

" The current system is simply not working and we do not have the time to waste. We need to make a radical change to our energy policy to ensure that we cut carbon emissions from electricity generation."
