The Liberal Democrats Shadow Solicitor General, the Cambridge MP, David Howarth, has called for stricter rules on party funding.

Mr Howarth said: "The whole system of party funding encourages subterfuge. We need much stricter rules on donating to political parties and defining how they can spend this money. The present system is clearly broke and is in urgent need of fixing.

"I hope that the debacle over the £400,000 donation to Labour from David Abrahams through Janet Kidd and Ray Ruddicks acts as a wake up call to Government. The system of party funding is on its last legs and is in urgent need of a proper overhaul."

Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said he is concerned about the arrangement, which was "plainly not transparent".

The Electoral Commission has also asked Labour to explain the donations.

The Labour party has confirmed general secretary Peter Watt will examine its donations.
