Mill Road Tesco rejected - "a victory for common sense."

A decision to stop supermarket giant, Tesco, opening in Mill Road, Cambridge is being celebrated as a "victory for common sense" by the city's MP David Howarth.

"I am delighted that this application has been rejected," said Mr Howarth. "If it had gone ahead it could have had disastrous consequences for the independent traders who make Mill Road such a special place in which to shop.

"This is a victory for common sense and it has been achieved thanks to everyone who supported this campaign to protect the unique character of Mill Road."

Mr Howarth's comments came after a planning inspector appointed by the Government rejected plans for the new Tesco Express store. The company took the case to appeal following Cambridge City Council's refusal to grant planning permission.
