Cambridge Liberal Democrats have promised to act as a strong voice for the city on local and national issues as the new coalition government begins its work.

They will call on their colleagues on the city council to back their pledge when they meet on Thursday (May 27).

A motion to be put forward by Lib Dem Councillor, Rod Cantrill will welcome the policies of the new government which reinforce the Lib Dems' commitment to fairness and freedom.

"The council's role with the new government will be to continue to act as a strong voice for Cambridge on local issues and a strong voice for Cambridge people on those national issues that affect the city," the motion reads. "It will work with the city's new MPs towards these goals."

Cllr Cantrill said: "We are fully committed to working to achieve the best for Cambridge. It is vital that local people believe we will act in their best interests to protect our commitment to fairness and freedom.

"We are entering a new era in national politics but we will not lose sight of what is important to the people of our city."
