Fix Our Pavements!

Julian Huppert MP with Cambridge Paralympic Hopeful Claire ConnonClaire Connon is a paralympic hopeful who lives in Abbey, she is aiming to compete as a sculler at Rio 2016. She contacted Julian after falling twice from her wheelchair on uneven pavements in Cambridge in the space of 10 days.

Claire has since teamed up with Julian Huppert MP to campaign for better pavements in Cambridge.

Claire Connon"Hi, I'm Claire, and I'm a passionate and dedicated athlete. I am also a full time wheelchair user which is why I got involved in this project. After falling out of my wheelchair twice in 10 days around the streets of Cambridge, I felt that I needed to do something about the situation. Especially as the second time I landed on my wrists which could have ended my rowing career before it had even started.

"When I'm not on the water or in the gym I'm also studying for a Masters degree in Geography, and enjoy seeing my friends and reading.

"It isn't until you experience using a wheelchair around the streets of Cambridge you realise how uneven they are. There's the obvious great big holes, but also small dips with slightly raised edges that, in my wheelchair I don't notice until you've hit it and then the trouble and accidents start.

"I hope that the County Council will listen to what we're saying and start looking at the most dangerous, to begin with, and start repairing them properly. Many areas have 5/6 different pavement types in a small area making for an uneven and dangerous pathway not just for wheelchair users, but anyone with mobility difficulties.

"Please help support this project and get the council to act and reduce these sort of accidents."

Julian said "The pavements in Cambridge have been bad for some time. The County Council has simply failed to invest the sort of money needed to keep them in good order. Talking to Claire really brought home to me the problems this causes for people in wheelchairs. It's simply unacceptable that more is not being done.

"I welcome the investment the County Council are finally putting in, but more still needs to be done. That's why we're launching this campaign. Please support us by signing the petition here and letting us know when you spot pavements in need of repair here.

"Together, we can get the County Council to take action."
