MP Julian Huppert will be joining members of a unique rowing club on Monday (June 30) to launch their latest boat, Spirit of Camrowers on the River Cam.
The double sculling boat was donated to Camrowers by the City of Cambridge Rowing Club and restored to add to its fleet which now totals 15 sculling boats.
Julian will meet the rowers at the Combined Colleges Boathouse in Logan’s Way, Chesterton to find out more about the boat and how it will help the club.
The unique rowing club caters for the over 50s and people referred for health reasons such as heart disease, diabetes and mental health problems and now has more than 80 members.
Camrowers have also received funding from Sport England’s Get Equipped Award, designed to build on the London 2012 Paralympics, to help some of its disabled rowers.
Julian said: “It’s a huge honour to be invited to launch the Spirit of Camrowers.
“Camrowers is an excellent club which has achieved so much and helped so many people. The club is proof, if it were needed, that older people and those who have health issues can still stay fit while at the same time enjoying the river and meeting new people. This is so important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and promote good physical and mental health.
“I hope they will enjoy the Spirit of Camrowers for many years to come.
