Julian joins youngsters to celebrate National School Sport Week

MP Julian Huppert will join the celebration at Cambridge’s Castle School on Friday (June 27) to mark National School Sport Week.

Delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, National School Sport Week is designed to inspire and engage young people in sport.

The theme this year is Give Me 5! With schools encouraged to promise that all their pupils will take part in five hours of PE and sport each week.

Julian said: “This is an excellent initiative which will hopefully encourage youngsters to try different sporting activities and develop a real love for sport and exercise.

“It is vital that we make sure our children stay active if they are to keep healthy and go on to lead active adult lives. It has been proven that active children do better at their lessons and have higher self-esteem and self-confidence.”

To maintain a basic level of health, experts recommend that young people take part in one hour of physical activity every day, yet a recent study by researchers at University College London’s Institute of Child Health suggests that only half of young people are reaching this important daily target.

Since its inception in 2009, National School Sport Week has seen 9.6 million young people and 22,000 schools take part.

The theme of the Week this year is ‘Give me 5!’ with schools encouraged to pledge that all their young people will take part in five hours of PE and sport during the week.
