A message from Julian Huppert to Cambridge Constituents:
I'm sorry to email so soon after my email yesterday on the budget but there is a pressing local issue I wanted to let you know about.
The County Council is hoping to allow a private company, KORA, to take over the third floor of the central library and turn it into a business lounge. The transformation would involve the loss of both the cafe and a significant amount of public community space.
Will you join me at a protest tomorrow against this decision?
In my view the central library is an important community space in the centre of the city. A quiet space open to all for people to get away from the hustle and bustle of the grand arcade. The cafe there provides an affordable alternative to the chain coffee shops that we have so many of in the city centre.
Shockingly, councillors were only informed of this proposal at a meeting this week - despite the fact that negotiations have apparently been going on between KORA and council staff for some time. Despite Lib Dem opposition, Conservative and UKIP councillors supported the proposal and so the only hope now is for the decision to be revisited.
Decisions like this should be made after a full consultation and by councillors aware of the full facts. This has not happened.
The protest tomorrow will be a chance to show the councillors the strength of feeling on this issue. Please join me there.
Please sign up below to join me tomorrow.
