Unruly Drinkers : City-wide Ban gets the go-ahead12.00.00am GMT Fri 5th Dec 2003 The Lib Dem proposal for a full city-wide ban on anti-social street drinking got the go-ahead at last night's council meeting. The council approved the new bye-law which has the full support of the police and those agencies who work with abusive street drinkers. "We are now looking to the government to approve the bye-law and hope to have the new powers fully in place early in 2004. We hope the city's MP Anne Campbell will now give her full support to the bye-law and lobby on our behalf in the corridors of Whitehall power", says Cllr Ian Nimmo-Smith, leader of the city council. He adds: "We believe that the once the police have the new bye-law, they will have all the powers they need to crack down on the worrying problem of anti-social street drinkers".
