City Council plans to sign climate change declaration.

Lib Dem City Councillors have introduced a motion to Council last week to agree to sign the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. The Declaration commits the Council to work with local residents, businesses and institutions to tackle both the causes and the effects of climate change. The motion was passed unanimously.

Coun Victoria Phillips, who proposed the motion, commented:

"We've already taken important steps to address the causes of climate change such as installing solar energy systems in Council houses at Cameron Road and Kendal Way and incorporating micro-generation into the East Chesterton Community Centre. And there are more important initiatives in the pipe-line such as including efficiency standards in the 'Cambridge Standard' for Council housing.

"However much more can and should be done to tackle the problem of climate change in the city. This motion sends a strong signal that the City Council is willing to take decisive action to tackle the problem here in Cambridge."

Coun Jenny Bailey, Executive City Councillor for Planning and Transport, added:

"The Liberal Democrats in Cambridge have always taken the issue of climate change very seriously and are committed to reducing Cambridge's contribution to climate change. Signing the Nottingham Declaration formalises this commitment.

"We will be working with Council staff to see how we can implement the commitments in the Declaration and work with those who live and work in Cambridge to reduce Cambridge's carbon footprint."
