Big Day for Everyday Sport10.19.15am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 12th Jun 2006 Cambridge has gone well and truly sporting mad this weekend with England's first World Cup match shown on Parker's Piece on Saturday and the Everyday Sport Roadshow coming to the Piece on Sunday. This weekend saw the kick-off for a summer of sport in the city designed to encourage everyone to get involved in more sport, to get fit and have fun. The Roadshow ran on Parker's Piece from 10am to 3pm and provided an opportunity to try new activities and sports and learn about clubs and facilities in Cambridge. Coun Julie Smith, Executive City Councillor for Arts and Recreation, said: "The City Council is working with the County Sports Partnership and Sport England to organise a whole host of different sporting activities for people in Cambridge and to encourage people to try something new this summer. Debbie Kay and the Active Communities team have made sterling efforts to allow this event to go forward "There are already large numbers of different clubs, societies and classes in a wide variety of different sports and outdoor pursuits, so there should be something for everyone!" Coun Phillippa Slatter, Lib Dem City Councillor for Trumpington ward, added: "We've had a great day out on Parker's Piece and it was an eye-opener to see the number of different sports and activities that people in Cambridge take part in. I wish I'd been able to play Korfball instead of netball when I was at school."
