Lib Dem boost for Cambridge's climate change plans5.39.29pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 22nd Sep 2006 Commenting at Brighton on policy decisions being made at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference, Coun Ian Nimmo-Smith, Leader of Cambridge City Council, said: "I fully support and welcome the policies on tax and on energy which are greener for the planet and fairer between sections of society. These will boost the plans we are making in Cambridge to join with resident and local businesses to make positive changes to our carbon emissions."
Liberal Democrat Party Conference, which is the main policy making forum in the party, this week passed policies to switch taxation from taxing work and individuals to taxing pollution. Combatting climate change and making the Green Switch is the main theme of this year's conference, which has also seen a motion put forward by Cambridge MP and Energy Spokesperson David Howarth pass by a huge majority. Mr. Howarth's motion rules out the use of nuclear power and makes radical changes to encourage microgeneration and renewable energy.
