Lib Dems welcome support for microgeneration

3.17.52pm GMT Mon 9th Oct 2006

David Howarth, Lib Dem Energy Spokesperson, has today welcomed the Energy Regulatory Ofgem's call for electricity suppliers to make it easier for householders to sell electricity back to the National Grid.

Ofgem has called for electricity suppliers to pay households for the electricity they put back to the grid from their wind turbines and solar panels.

Mr. Howarth commented:

"Decentralised electricity production has a huge role to play in reducing the UK's carbon emissions. Households, businesses and communities should be encouraged to generate their own, renewable, energy and so the electricity companies should pay them for the electricity they pass back to the National Grid.

"I welcome Ofgem's remarks. Providing real economic incentives to save carbon through greater energy efficiency and use of renewable fuels is crucial to building a sustainable energy policy that combats climate change. Supporting and encouraging decentralised electricity production must be part of this."
