Nearly one third of Cambridge Post Offices closed under Labour

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has asked Trade and Industry Minister Alistair Darling when the Post Offices closures will end, during a debate on the future of the Post Office network in the House of Commons yesterday.

Mr. Howarth commented:

"Here in Cambridge we have lost nearly one third of our sub Post Offices since Labour came to power. The Government are now planning a further 2,500 closures, where will it end?

"The Government has consistently undermined the financial viability of the Post Office by removing their role in processing TV licences, vehicle excise duty and their involvement in passport authentication work. Post Offices provide a valuable service and an important community focal point for many people and the continued closure of this service is a disgrace.

"I have written to Alistair Darling and to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail to ask their assurance that no more Post Offices will be closed in Cambridge."
