Blair takes the fifth on honours scandal

3.37.14pm GMT Wed 31st Jan 2007

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has today challenged the Prime Minister to answer question on his involvement in the loans for honours scandal.

David's question followed news yesterday that Blair ally, and chief Labour fundraiser, Lord Levy has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. He asked the Prime Minister why he has refused to answer questions on the loans scandal. The Prime Minister refused to answer David's question.

David commented:

"Why is Tony Blair refusing to answer questions on the loans for honours scandal? Is he taking the fifth? Is he afraid that he might incriminate himself?

"The case is beginning to have the air of Watergate about it. The latest arrests focused on evidence of a possible cover-up.

"The Prime Minster's silence is becoming increasingly untenable. It is time for him to come clean. What did he know about the sale of honours and when did he know it?"
