Outrage as MPs vote for secrecy

David Howarth, Lib Dem MP for Cambridge, has described the vote in the House of Commons for the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill as an outrage.

MPs voted today for MPs and Peers to be exempt from freedom of information laws. Commenting on the decision, David said:

"This is an outrage. It is immoral for Parliament to give itself an exemption it refuses others.

"The real aim of this Bill is to prevent MPs's expenses and allowances being made public. This public has a right to this information and it is shocking that so many MPs have voted to exempt themselves from the Freedom of Information Act."

Despite efforts by a cross-party group of MPs including David Howarth, the Bill passed its third reading by 96 votes to 25.
