'Celebrate age with free personal care'

10.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 9th Oct 2007

As 'Cambridgeshire Celebrates Age' gets underway, Cambridge MP David Howarth has called for older people to receive free personal care.

David joined Cambridgeshire Celebrates Age this week and has been campaigning to save in-patient wards for older people at Brookfields Hospital. Commenting, he said:

"Many vulnerable older people are forced to sell their homes to pay for expensive care homes and others are impoverished attempting to pay for help with being fed or bathed.

"It is ridiculous to try to separate, the way the Government does, nursing care for older people which they agree to pay for, and personal care, which elderly people have to fund themselves.
