MP disappointed at 'weak' Climate Change Bill

5.07.31pm GMT Tue 6th Nov 2007

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has described the Climate Change Bill announced today as 'weak'.

David was a member of the pre-legislative Draft Climate Change Bill Committee which fought to toughen the bill, he was disappointed with the final bill was announced in the Queen's Speech today.

David commented:

"The Government has made some important concessions on the Climate Change Bill but not enough and so the final bill is still too weak.

"Instead of a 60% target reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, the latest scientific evidence shows that we need to be cutting our emissions by at least 80%. And this must include all greenhouse gas emissions, not just carbon dioxide as the Government proposes.

"Finally the Government should not have ignored emissions from international aviation and shipping if it intends to take climate change seriously."
