LIB DEMS CALL FOR BETTER PLANNING OF HGV ROUTES - COUNTY

12.00.00am GMT Fri 7th Mar 2008

Lib Dem councillors called for more explicit planning of the routes which trucks carrying sand and gravel will use at the County Council Development Control Committee meeting on 3rd March. The committee reviewed the County's minerals and waste plan.

There will be movements of about 3 million tons a year, which equates to about 5000 trucks a day, to meet the needs of the County's growth. There is a real need to plan for this and to ensure that it does not ruin the quality of life in Cambridgeshire's villages.

The committee endorsed this view and qualified its recommendation to the Council's cabinet accordingly. It was further suggested that the joint development control committees, for the Cambridge Fringes and for Northstowe, vigorously impose conditions on developers which will force them to adhere to approved routes.

Tim Stone, member of the Development Control Committee and Lib Dem councillor for Duxford, said:

"It's important that we take positive action. It will not be easy but we must find ways of managing this traffic. People will not thank us if we simply let it happen. It must be an integral part of the planning process."
