COUNTY BY-ELECTION CALLED IN MAY FOR ROMSEY - COUNTY

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 20th Mar 2008

Lib Dem County Councillor for Romsey Alice Douglas resigned this morning and a by-election is expected on May 1st.

Alice Douglas was elected in a by-election in 2006 with 40.2% of the vote - the Labour candidate came a distant second with 27.6% of the vote.

Ms Douglas recently moved to London after getting a full-time job there and decided it would be very difficult to continue to represent the people of Romsey properly.

Ms Douglas commented:

"I believe Romsey residents deserve a Councillor who can dedicate more time than I can right now.

"I'm honoured that they have given me their trust to represent them on Cambridgeshire County Council. I know they will choose wisely and I'm confident they will elect another Liberal Democrat to make themselves heard in the County Council."
