WATERBEACH DROPPED FROM ECO-TOWNS PLAN - COUNTY

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 3rd Apr 2008

The Government announced that Waterbeach would not be on the shortlist for new eco-towns.

Michael Williamson, County Councillor for Waterbeach, echoed the relief that Waterbeach has been dropped. In the last couple of years, he repeatedly spoke out against the scheme, alongside all Liberal Democrat Councillors of Cambridgeshire.

Mr Williamson commented:

"This was just an old scheme which had been rejected in 2003 now dressed up with the eco-town label. I am pleased the Minister has seen through this ploy to resurrect a scheme that would have been bad for the whole local area.

"The scheme would have dramatically damaged the quality of life for Waterbeach residents. A new dormitory town would have brought increasing traffic to an already massively congested area.

"Now, the Government must go all the way and take Hanley Grange off the shortlist."
