A scheme designed to raise awareness of local geography and citizenship among Cambridge schoolchildren has been supported by city MP David Howarth.

Ordnance Survey is offering 11-year-olds living in the city the opportunity to receive free maps through their schools.

Fifteen schools are taking part in the scheme, which has been running nationally since 2002 and this year will see the distribution of the five-millionth free map.

Mr Howarth said: "This is an excellent scheme which encourages children to find out more about their city and the area in which they live.

"I am delighted that so many schools are taking up this opportunity, which not only gives the children an interest in local geography but could prove to be a valuable teaching tool."

Schools with Year 7 or Primary 7 pupils are eligible to join and order maps for their pupils online. In addition the school receives teacher copies of the map.
