Construction of Trumpington’s new multi-use community centre on Hobson Square is due to start later this year, following the appointment of ISG as contractors. The new community centre will be a landmark building for the Southern Fringe and will provide a mix of community facilities, including a hall for events and activities, a public library, a café, and children’s room on the ground floor, while on the first floor there will be further library space and community meeting rooms. The second floor will be home to a new medical centre, featuring nine consulting rooms, a minor operations treatment centre and other medical facilities.
The building has been financed using the “S106” developer contributions and will be jointly owned by the City and County Councils. A management company has been created on which representatives of both councils will sit. Currently both Trumpington’s County Councillor, Barbara Ashwood and City Councillor Andy Blackhurst are serving as Directors. Cllr Ashwood’s past experience as a librarian with the County’s library service will be invaluable and – in contrast to current plans for the city’s Central Library – both have stated very firmly that they hope the community café will be the future heart of the complex.
