Cambridge’s 8,870 carers who contribute billions of pounds worth of savings for the taxpayer have been recognised in a new package of support unveiled by the Liberal Democrats says Julian Huppert.
Every year almost 3,000 people in Cambridge start caring for family and friends and now they will benefit under a £150 million initiative.
Plans will include a £250 Carers’ Bonus, funded by a tax on tobacco companies, additional leave each year and free hospital parking.
The amount they can earn before losing their carers’ allowance will also increase from £110 to £150.
“Carers are vital in our communities,” said Julian, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Cambridge. “They take care of family, relatives and friends with very little reward. And it can be difficult to take on a caring role while also meeting the demands of working and family lives.
“This package of support thanks them for the incredible work they do and gives them the recognition they deserve.”
