Discovering Cambridge- Six Months On

27 June, 2013 No Comments

Our independent traders give the city its unique appeal and make Cambridge such a distinctive place in which to live and visit. This is the reason why I wanted to celebrate our independent shops with Discovering Cambridge.

Throughout the competition there have been monthly winners in each category and all those winners go through to be considered as the overall competition winner, which will be announced at the Mill Road Winter Fair this December.

The competition has been a great success so far, and a much needed opportunity for us all to step back and appreciate what Cambridge has to offer among its independent traders.

Whilst visiting Cambridge retailers I have been impressed by the passion and desire to succeed that the owners have shown. I have enjoyed meeting owners and staff who are proud of their work and produce.

Discovering Cambridge is a great chance for residents to visit these numerous independent shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs that can be found around Cambridge, try their goods and services, and nominate their favourites.

I hope the publicity for the winners so far, from sources such as my website, have given their businesses a well deserved boost and I hope to see many more worthy winners over the coming months.

In January we had gourmet coffee house ‘Hot Numbers’ steam into first place for Best Independent Coffee Shop. February’s category of Best Independent Music or Book Shop, we had two very deserving winners in bespoke music retailer ‘Rhythm Online’ and the well established ‘G. David, Bookseller’ respectively.

In March we had Italian Delicatessen ‘Limoncello’ winning the category for the Best Independent Specialist Food and Drink Shop. The Best Independent Sports and Outdoor Activities Shop category in April went predictably to a bicycle shop with family run Kingsway Cycles taking the prize. More recently in May we had the fabulous Modish winning Best Independent Clothing and Accessories.

The future categories are:

June – The Best Independent Shop for Children

July – The Best Independent Pub

August – The Best Independent Home and Garden Shop

September – Best Independent Café or Restaurant

October – Best Independent Arts and Crafts Shop
