Councillors Julian Huppert and Marian Holness collecting signatures for a petition for better school funding in East Chesterton
Liberal Democrat Councillor for East Chesterton Marian Holness has today welcomed the success of a campaign towards creating a new all-through primary school in East Chesterton.
Cambridgeshire County Council's cabinet met today to approve the formation of a legal agreement with the Church Schools of Cambridge Trust to close St Andrew's Junior School and transfer the pupils to a new all-through primary school at Shirley School.
The decision to close St Andrews was made following a public consultation after the Church of England Primary School was placed on special measures in September. The new community school will have 420 pupils and a nursery on the site of St Andrews in Nuffield Road.
Councillor Holness commented:
"I'm delighted that the Council has taken another step towards the creation of a high quality all-through primary school at Shirley. The children in East Chesterton deserve the best education we can provide and so I'm very pleased that our local campaign is succeeding."
The final decision will be made by the Schools Organisation Committee on Thursday of this week.
