Government admits responsibility for Iraqi violence

December 11, 2006 1:58 PM

Jack Straw has today admitted that the Government and Prime Minister Tony Blair are responsible for the violence and insurgency in Iraq.

The admission came following a question in Business Questions today by Cambridge Lib Dem MP David Howarth. Mr. Howarth asked Jack Straw whether his Government took responsibility for the current situation in Iraq as outlined in the Baker-Hamilton report, published yesterday.

Mr. Howarth commented:

"The Government is responsible for the violence, insurgency and criminality in Iraq. The Baker Report outlined how the Iraqi

government is failing to advance national reconciliation or to provide basic public services. I'm pleased that the Labour Government is finally admitting their responsibility for the mess they have made in Iraq. This war is the biggest British foreign policy disaster since Suez.

"We urgently need a new strategy for Iraq, and the withdrawal of British troops."
