Government condemned over torture flights

February 14, 2007 7:00 PM

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has today responded to news that the European Parliament has condemned member states for turning a blind eye to secret CIA torture flight.

The UK, Germany and Italy were among the 14 countries which allowed the United States to forcibly remove terror suspects to countries where they could face torture. The European Parliament voted today to condemn the actions of the member states involved.

Mr Howarth commented:

"The UK simply turned a blind eye to the CIA's torture flights. This is totally unacceptable and so I am very pleased that the European Parliament has stood up and condemned these actions.

"The Government now needs to legislate to prevent the use of UK airfields for extraordinary rendition flights."
