March 8, 2007 5:00 PM

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, is today celebrating victory as MPs voted for the House of Lords to be 100% elected.

Last night MPs voted by a majority of 113 votes to support 100% elected peers in the upper chamber. Mr. Howarth spoke in the debate in favour of the 100% elected option.

Mr. Howarth commented:

"This is a historic result. The battle to reform the unelected and unaccountable House of Lords began 100 years ago and this is the first time that there has been a clear and unambiguous vote from MPs in favour of reform."

The vote last night was not binding on Government ministers. The Leader of the Commons Jack Straw has pledged to put together a cross-party group of MPs together to discuss the next stage of reform.
