Sellafield scandal highlights culture of secrecy

Lib Dem Energy Spokesperson David Howarth has condemned the culture of secrecy in the nuclear power industry.

David's comments follow the launching of an inquiry into the secret removal of body tissue for 65 nuclear workers at Sellafield. The tissue was taken from workers between 1962 and 1991.

David commented:

"This inquiry needs to find out what were the health concerns that led the industry to carry out these secret investigations. What were they looking for and what did they find?

"Yet again the nuclear industry has proved itself to be inherently secretive and these investigations show that even the industry did not have total confidence in nuclear power's safety. Is it any wonder that the public still do not trust nuclear power?"
