Climate targets must not ignore aviation
David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has demanded that the Government set carbon targets for aviation.
During a parliamentary debate yesterday on climate change, Mr Howarth challenged the Government to include aviation and shipping in their 5 year climate change targets.
Commenting, Mr Howarth said:
"The Government must not exclude aviation and shipping from climate change targets. If we are to significantly reduce our carbon emissions we cannot afford to ignore the emissions from aviation."
The Government claimed that it would be too complicated to include aviation and shipping in the UK's targets.
Mr Howarth added:
"The government's claim is just an excuse. The Tyndall Centre have pointed out just how easily the Government could incorporate aviation and shipping into their climate change targets. Without this the targets are not tough enough to tackle climate change."
