Three major areas of Cambridge are to be the subject of studies launched by the city's Lib Dems in a bid to protect their character and history.

These rapid appraisals on sensitive areas which are subject to change could lead to them being designated as conservation areas.

Huntingdon Road to the city boundary, Madingley Road, including Hedgerley Close and Bulstrode Gardens and Barton Road, including Barton Close have come out top of a list of potential sites and will go forward for analysis.

Cambridge City Council leader, Cllr Ian Nimmo-Smith said: "There has been a strong response from members of the public and their representatives who recognise the need to protect the character of the approaches to Cambridge.

"These studies covering the western and north-western approaches may lead to guidance for planning decisions to ensure that they respect that character."

The Suburbs and Approaches Studies will identify the important character of the three areas and buildings of local interest and were given the go-ahead at a meeting of the city council's environment scrutiny committee today (Tuesday).
