MP welcomes move to save Post Office Card Account

HowarthCambridge MP David Howarth has welcomed the news that the Post Office will continue to run the card account which is used by over 3,700 people in the city.

The Post Office had faced competition to run the service from a private firm. But today (Thursday) ministers closed the bidding process for the account, used by people to receive pensions and benefits.

Mr Howarth, who wrote dozens of letters in support of the fight to save it, said: "I am delighted that the Government has come to its senses and realised how valuable this account is, not only for the people who use it but also for the viability of the post office network.

"The Post Office Card Account offers an accessible and affordable way for thousands of people in Cambridge to receive their benefits and destroying it would have caused these people hardship.

"I am delighted to see that ministers have decided not to deal another blow to post offices."
