• The opening of Jamie's Italian sees the completion of the final part of a major £1.2m investment undertaken by the City Council to reinvigorate the Peas Hill and Wheeler Street area of the Guildhall.
• The project has incorporated a new Corn Exchange Box Office located on Wheeler Street and a new Tourist Information Centre and shop together with a cafe that opened in the old court space in the autumn of 2009. In addition a new attraction called "Cambridge Revisited" recently opened in the Old Court itself.
• The aim of the overall project has been to make better public use of a prime city centre location owned by the Council and to generate a valuable future income stream.
Coun Rod Cantrill, Executive City Councillor for Customer Services and Resources, commented:
"The City Council welcomes the opening of Jamie's Italian and congratulates Jamie on the transformation of the Old Library area into a vibrant space.
The opening is the culmination of a complex three year project that has involved the relocation of a number of key council services and extensive construction work to the Guildhall, a listed building.
The project is an excellent illustration of how the Council has sought to ensure the on-going vitality and economic prosperity of Cambridge's city centre whilst at the same time improving the level of services to residents and visitors"
