MP urges youngsters to compete for national awards

August 5, 2010 3:02 PM

Julian HuppertCambridge youngsters working to make life better for their community are being urged to compete for a national award by the city's MP, Julian Huppert.

Julian is supporting the Philip Lawrence Awards which are open to young people aged 11 to 20 and recognise the outstanding contribution to their communities.

"Cambridge is fortunate to have a wealth of young talent and these awards give them the opportunity to be recognised for their efforts," said Julian. "Whether they are volunteering, campaigning, helping others or getting involved in positive activities they are making a difference.

"We hear so many negative stories in the press about young people that these awards help to alter that perception and show that most are making a positive contribution."

The Philip Lawrence Awards were set up in memory of Head teacher Philip Lawrence who was killed outside his school in 1995 after going to the aid of a pupil who was being attacked by a gang.

Since they began in 1997 they have rewarded 1,200 young people from across the UK.
