Cambridge City Council leader, Sian Reid, has welcomed news that councils and businesses could be given control of the purse strings for inward investment and skills funding.

The announcement comes as a result of a U-turn by Communities Secretary,

Eric Pickles following industry lobbying.

It means that investment coming into the region could be controlled by council and business representatives on the Local Enterprise Partnership which is being set up to replace the East of England Development Agency.

Initially Mr Pickles had told councils that the lead on this would come from national government.

Cllr Reid said: "This is extremely welcome news. It means that money coming into the region for innovation and skills funding can be managed locally and directed to where it will bring the most benefits.

"Decisions will be taken by those who have thorough knowledge of the area to benefit the people directly."
