MP crosses border into Gaza on four day official visit

Julian HuppertCambridge MP Julian Huppert has entered Gaza after it took almost three hours to get across the border from Egypt.

He made the crossing as part of a four-day visit to the area with a delegation of MPs and will meet refugees and aid workers.

Julian has seen the tunnels where goods are smuggled from Egypt and visited new homes being built.

He said: "Many of the tunnels are closing since the Israel crossing became more open; but there are many left, some large enough to drive a car through. They are amazingly well organised and blatant.

"I have seen the UN home construction project. Good quality, cheap buildings are going up; but the building work is being held up by a lack of construction materials."

This evening (Friday, October 8) Julian will be meeting health officials.

The trip also includes a visit to the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme and the delegation will visit schools where they will hear first hand about teaching programmes put in place for youngsters. There will also be a visit to a food distribution centre and a water plant.
