MP Julian Huppert has welcomed the government's commitment to cycling following news that children's training scheme, Bikeability, has been saved.
Plans to provide financial support for the scheme under a new Local Sustainable Transport Fund were announced yesterday (Wednesday, October 20) as part of the government's Comprehensive Spending Review.
Julian had written to Norman Baker, Under-Secretary of State for Transport urging the government to continue funding Bikeability at the same level after news that Cycling England, which supported the project, was being abolished in March 2011.
He said: "I am delighted that the government has shown its commitment to cycling by agreeing funding for this worthwhile scheme. This decision means that future generations of young people will be encouraged to cycle to school and for leisure and to see the bicycle as a viable means of transport."
Clare Blair, Cambridge City Executive Councillor for Climate Change and Growth said: "We have worked hard in Cambridge to promote cycling at every level and have large numbers of children cycling to school.
"The government's commitment to the future of the Bikeability scheme is an important endorsement of the work being done locally to encourage greener forms of transport."
