Developers Grosvenor are holding an exhibition to promote their proposals for a Sporting Village from 12 noon to 9 pm on Monday 18 May at Trumpington Meadows Primary School. They have previously proposed further development in the Green Belt between Trumpington Meadows and the motorway and on the other side of the motorway as well, and it seems safe to assume these proposals will be similar.

Previously they have outlined proposals for an additional 450 homes to the south and west of the existing plans for Trumpington Meadows, overlooking the new Country Park, together with the “Sporting Village”. Plans to build a new stadium for Cambridge United on the site have been abandoned, in favour of redeveloping the existing Abbey site, but the “Sporting village” would still include large-scale sports buildings and pitches with associated infrastructure in the land either side of the motorway. These are not intended as local facilities but as a sub-regional centre, drawing in users from a wide area.

Grosvenor’s proposals are contrary to the vision in the draft Local Plans produced by the (then Lib Dem) City Council and by South Cambs District Council. which are currently the subject of the public inquiry. We fought hard to protect the vision of an expanded Trumpington outlined in the 2006 Local Plan – expanding to provide sorely-needed new homes, yes, but with a vision of a creating a distinct “edge” to the city and retaining sufficient Green Belt to preserve the city’s setting and character. We are concerned that this proposal would destroy that vision, create new stresses on our infrastructure and disrupt the process of assimilating the already-scheduled new developments into the community of Trumpington.

Please do go along to the exhibition and make your views known.
