MP Julian Huppert will join Chief Treasury Secretary, Danny Alexander on Monday (March 16) for a visit to the site in Cambridge which will eventually house Papworth Hospital.
The visit, which comes as the city marks Cambridge Business Week, has been scheduled as building work is about to start on the project after the government approved funding for the move.
Julian has been instrumental in pushing the project forward in government, lobbying ministers and raising the issue in Parliament and at a large number of private meetings.
He spoke many times with Danny Alexander, who praised him for his efforts, and also with Health Ministers.
Julian also took the concerns of Papworth Hospital to the government after the project stalled early last year and there were fears that the move might not take place.
“I am delighted that work on the project is about to get underway,” said Julian. “This is excellent news for Cambridge, the county and health care generally.
“This project will combine the two world-class hospitals of Papworth and Addenbrooke’s together on one site with the first-class expertise that offers to patients. This move also reinforces Cambridge’s position as a world leader in health care, research and development.”
Julian’s efforts have won praise from Papworth Hospital Chairman, Professor John Wallwork.
He said: “Julian has been instrumental in helping Papworth reach this historic milestone.
“His involvement in the New Papworth Hospital project provided the much needed catalyst that enabled us to gain momentum and ultimately reach financial close today. His on-going commitment to this project and the hospital is very much appreciated."
Before the visit Julian will be taking part in hustings to mark Cambridge Business Week.
