MP visits grit mountain as county makes time for winter
January 7, 2012
Cambridge MP Julian Huppert visited the county’s grit mountain on Thursday (January 5) to see how supplies have been stockpiled in case of a big freeze.
He is backing the Highways Agency’s Winter Campaign with a visit to the depot at Whittlesford where the team is geared up to tackle the worst the winter weather can bring.
Thousands of tonnes of grit are brought in each year to fill the fleet of gritting lorries tasked with keeping the county’s road network moving in freezing weather.
The Highway Agency’s campaign “Make Time for Winter”, which runs until next month, reminds drivers about the importance of checking traffic and weather updates before setting off on journeys and driving with care during the winter.
Julian said: “During bad weather, it is important that everyone plays his or her part in keeping the county moving.
“Making sure vehicles are ready for winter, checking traffic and weather updates and taking extra care when driving will help to avoid breakdowns and accidents. That makes it much easier for the Highways Agency teams to do their jobs efficiently to keep our road network clear and traffic moving.
“I am looking forward to learning more about the planning and preparation that goes into this huge task.”
