Rhythm Online and David’s Bookshop top of the city chart
A unique online record shop run from a terraced house in Cambridge and a city bookshop established for over 100 years have been selected as joint winners of MP Julian Huppert’s Discovering Cambridge competition this month.
Residents put Rhythm Online and G David Bookseller at the top of the chart when asked to choose their favourite Books and Music Shops.
Rhythm Online in Catherine Street is run by Nick and Jude Clarke and they claim to “specialize in all things alternative or ‘independent’ and pride ourselves on the size and comprehensive yet eclectic nature of our listings.”
They offer all the newest indie releases along with a selection of rare and collectible items.
The business started in 1985 from a market stall then developed into a small mail order catalogue business and finally went online in the 1990s.
G David Bookseller, know as David’s, in St Edward’s Passage was established in 1896 and deals in antiquarian, second hand and remaindered (reduced price) books, maps, prints and engravings. There is also an extensive range of books about the city and local area.
Julian said: “I am delighted with the way in which people across the city have engaged with Discovering Cambridge and taken the time to nominate their favourite independent businesses.
“I decided that we should have two winners because these businesses are both unique and special in their own ways. Now I hope that residents and visitors will take the time to find out more about what these businesses have to offer.
Julian will be visiting both businesses this afternoon (Friday, March 1) to present their certificates and they will go through to the final in December. The overall competition winner will be announced at the annual Mill Road Winter Fair.
This month’s category for Discovering Cambridge will be Specialist Food and Drink to tie in with the Cambridge Food Festival.
Nominations can be sent to Julian on Twitter @julianhuppert or Facebook, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by post to Discovering Cambridge, Julian Huppert MP, 16 Signet Court, Swann’s Road, Cambridge, CB5 8LA.
