PUBLIC SCREENING CALL FOR EUROS FINAL
Following on from England’s semi-final victory in the Euros last night, a call has been made for the council to arrange a public screen for Sunday’s final against Spain.
In a message this morning to Executive Councillor for Open Spaces Sam Carling, Lib Dem Opposition leader Cllr Tim Bick has made the formal request.
Cllr Bick said:
“This is an ideal opportunity to bring the city together behind the success of our national team. We have seen on our TVs other UK cities doing this even for the earlier stages of the competition, and it seems something that Cambridge could now do at this final stage.
“There is much pride in the England team - in what it has achieved and the values it stands for. The city council would like to bring the city together. Sometimes the opportunities to do that don’t come off council reports and policy resolutions and it’s just important to respond to people’s own appetite to share hopes and excitement with each other.
“This could be a great event for an inclusive experience for families and children.
“As England has been one of the favourites in the competition, it would be surprising if the council hadn’t already made contingency plans. I do hope so. And I hope for a positive announcement in the next couple of days.”
