Katie Barron - the hardworking choice for Newnnham
Katie moved to Cambridge when her son started school. As a mum and teacher in Special Needs, Katie is in touch with the experiences of a wide diversity of Cambridge residents, aware of the opportunities and difficulties of living in this city. In her spare time, Katie enjoys walking, writing and cheering her son in football and hockey matches.
Katie has always been passionate about saving wildlife and this year has taken the no-flight pledge. Within the Liberal Democrats, Katie is a member of the Green Lib Dems and the Social Liberal Forum, both of which explore and promote holistic solutions to the destructive tendencies of our current economy. Katie believes that the widening wealth gap in the UK underlies many of our problems, blocking transition to greener ways of life, incubating hate speech and placing ever increasing demands on healthcare and social services. Within the Lib Dems and beyond, Katie is researching and campaigning to reduce tax on the lowest paid and cancel tax reliefs for the highest paid.

The Liberal Democrats are winning here in Cambridge - and can beat Labour in this year's city council elections and overtake them as the largest party on the City Council.
In last year's local elections, the Lib Dems won the most seats in Cambridge city - electing 7 councillors - while winning the second most votes across the city to Labour. The Lib Dems also elected the most county councillors of any party in Cambridge constituency.
This continues a long record of the Lib Dems being the closest challengers to Labour. Only Lib Dem or Labour MPs have been elected for Cambridge constituency this century, and only the Lib Dems or Labour have been the largest party on the city council in the same time period.
The Lib Dems are also the party with momentum in Cambridgeshire going into this year's local elections. In the 2024 General Election, the 3 Lib Dems were elected for the seats surrounding Cambridge, as Lib Dem Cheney Payne finished as the closest challenger to Labour here in the city. Last year, the Liberal Democrats gained overall control of the County Council for the first time in its history.
This year, the Lib Dems are once again the clear challengers to Labour in Cambridge. As the main opposition on the City Council with 12 councillors, only the Lib Dems can overtake Labour and replace their failing leadership of the City Council. With less than half the number of councillors the Lib Dems have, the Green Party are too far behind and won't be able to overtake Labour. The Conservatives with one councillor and Reform with none have no chance.
A vote for the Green Party, Conservatives or Reform risks keeping Labour in power for another year and continuing their record of letting Cambridge down.
